Material was removed very slowly and details were recorded at each terrace level. Construction proved to be a series of rough walls, nested together in different patterns at each level. The core walls in any one level could be removed in any order. All were independently stable. There were no outer retaining walls. Terrace facings, which had fallen away long before, had served no containing role. This elaborate method of construction was clearly meant to combat any tendency for outward thrusts to develope. All material making up the whole, solid, pyramidal substructure was masonry set stone by stone in lime mortar. Individual stones are not large.
